What's the policy on other source materials, for example the trees and foliage from episode 2 or even custom models and materials?

Custom Models are the absolute best way you could possibly go. As for using ep2 stuff.. *I* don't recommend it (that's just me saying this), simply because we don't mount ep2 content. Also, as soon as appid 218 works, tf2 content won't auto-mount anymore either ;)

Question: Assuming we have maps that get closer to a release. Is there an official moddeler on the team that would be interested in doing some models?

I undersatnd if the map is not going to be an official one there wouldnt be much of a point, but I thought I would ask.

I'd like to see the torch in the left middle of this shot modeled. it is used in several Metroid Screenshots I have seen.
I'm already attempting to remake it in map brushes, but a model would be nicer.

I dunno myself. I think direct recreations of Metroid artwork is cutting a bit close to the line personally and it's not our style. Plus I think that's a fairly weak model anyway and we could definitely do better than that. Keep working, make the surroundings, build a very rough brushwork prefab of what you are looking for. And I'm sure I can direct someone at it when the need becomes apparent.

Couldn't agree more. I came up with my own torch trying to utilize the design work you already set forth. The torch would work better as a prop though because I used quite a few brushes to make it. Func_Detail or not, it still effects fps.
