3mm_niobe [WIP]

Postby moconnor on Thu Feb 14, 2008 12:29 pm

Hello to everybody.

Just thought I would get a thread going on this map I've decided to undertake for the mapping contest.
I'm going for a small dm map (around the same size as two bridges) This is mainly due to time constraints on my behalf.
That and I'm trying to get back into the swing of things and I do not want to undertake anything too ambitious( I have not mapped in quite a while).

I've never played any of the metroid games (heard of though) But the main aspect of the game that intrigues me is the art style and direction.
I think I can relate to this, so this should help me alot during development.

First up, I've started to do a few rough architectural and colour sketches in Photoshop.
For now, I'm experimenting with some doorway shapes. Something I've always had a gripe with is having a universal door frame to start off with. I think everybody
has there own little starting points when it comes to creating a map, this seems to be mine. :)

here is four I've recently thrown together

Frame Sketch A
Frame Sketch B
Frame Sketch C
Frame Sketch D

I'd like to hear which ones any of you prefer - if any - please say so, I'd like to get things moving along ;P
Also, the colours I have used are the colours I am thinking of using for a new texture set.

I'm working on hallway supports and other supports of sort as well. So I can start getting some ideas for other shapes and architecture.
I'll post these later when i get more done.

Hello Moconnor,

I like the sketches. Personally I like doorways B and C, particualrly as I planned to have doorways very similar to C, so I'd say go for C. I think this shape also lends to intresting architectural supports. Then again this is just my personal taste. -The taste of a star wars fan. lol

Looks like a really good start :)

Personally I think you've made the right choice on the map style and I like your sketches for the style of those doorways, my personal favorite is A as it goes, but they are all really interesting.

I'm looking forward to seeing more!

Two corridor support sketches.
I have not had much time to work on much lately. Deadlines and what not to meet :?

This first corridor will be high ceilinged (tall if you want)

I'll have 2 more for tomorrow then I think I'll move onto creating the actual textures and getting things roughed up in hammer.

Do you have a layout or setting in mind already?

For now I have an interior setting in mind, and thats what I am working on atm.
If an outside area is going to be done it will probably be something similar to twin bridges.

As for the layout, I have some ideas, but I want to see how things start off for me, I'd like to make
this a smallish level, I'm not going for anything to grand just yet ;) . Don't worry I'll be posting
some layout sketches soon as well, once I get some momentum going with the development. :D

That said, I'm open to any suggestions/thoughts you might have about a layout.

You're doing it backwards from us then. Looking forward to see how it turns out!

I got a third support style done.

Support Sketch C

This sketch is of the shape of the corridor. I took the door frame from the previous sketches. I like the style of this one.
The circular parts are where pipe would be going, (perhaps not a big, maybe multiple small pipes as well.)

Corridor Shape A

I'm going to start fleshing things out in hammer pretty soon. I'll be looking more closely at the layout then ;)
